Date hierarchy and drill-downs in PowerBI

In Tableau we can use dates as dimensions, measures, discrete and continuous variables, which are all handled differently when creating a chart.

If we want to move from year to quarter, month or day there are a few different ways we can do that.

Drill down: Select the drill down (downward arrow) button and then select a data point. If you selected the year 2021, it will show the quarters in 2021.

Go to the next level in hierarchy: Double downward arrow button. The new chart will show the quarters, months or days depending on the level, but none of the levels above (January will contain all the records for January 2020, 2021 etc.)

This works like the discrete dates in Tableau.

Expand all down one level in the hierarchy: Branching arrow button. The next chart will show all the records

This works like the continuous dates in Tableau. At the day level, it looks like the Exact Date.
