How was my first week at the Data School?

To sum it up, it was nerve-racking but exciting at the same time. A lot of questions were going through my mind: Will I be able to understand all the information in German? Will I be able to answer the coaches’ questions?

On the first day, we learned a bit about the company’s culture and strategy. There were a lot of information and administrative tasks provided by our head coach and HR. The second day was filled with an introduction to analytics architecture and data projects, we talked a bit more about the training’s curriculum and what was expected from us.

The third and fourth days were actually when the training started with two ETL (extract-transform-load) programs. On Wednesday, Nico, one of our coaches, introduced us to Tableau’s data preparation product. Tableau Prep is a visual data preparation tool that enables quick data cleaning, reshaping, and preparation so you can begin data analysis more quickly. The second ETL program was Alteryx. This was a new software for me so I was a bit anxious at the beginning that I wouldn’t be able to understand it but it helped to have the fundamentals from the previous day to compare it with Alteryx. There were a lot of functions that I needed to remember which one does what but working on my first Alteryx challenge helped me assimilate all the fundamentals taught over the last two days.

Friday was our first assignment as DSers. We had to prepare a 10-minute presentation about a topic that we learned this week. I won’t go into too much detail as I’ll write a new blog post (maybe in German) about it but for now, I just want to thank the Information Lab for the opportunity given and I’m looking forward to what comes next!
