Text and titles in Tableau dashboards and visualizations

The main goal of data visualizations is to accurately and efficiently convey information but why do data visualizations require texts and titles? The text makes a difference in conveying your observations, helps you to describe how to interpret a chart, offers precise values and information, and engages your audience.

How can you use titles and subtitles effectively?

In order to draw your audience, you can use a compelling title to entice your viewers, contextualize the data, and set the scene. But make your point really clear and try to keep it as brief as you can as this gives your audience the chance to quickly gain insights on a certain topic and avoid being misinterpreted.

What types of titles can you use?

Questions, definitive statements, descriptive titles, and inventive titles are some examples of titles you can use. Using questions in the headers of your visualizations and dashboards can help you build the correct expectations with your audience and let them know what to expect. Ensure that your analysis, visualization, and insights provide an adequate response to the query.

Definitive statements are used to clearly convey your findings, highlight the most important insights up front, establish your tone and attitude, and make sure your visualization supports the assertion you make in the title.

Descriptive titles give a brief summary of your research and conclusions and aid the reader in understanding the subject, but avoid making a conclusive statement. Even if your title is lengthier, make sure it is concise and clear so that your readers can comprehend it right away.

Sometimes there’s the opportunity to use eccentric titles that might pique the readers’ interest. It’s not wrong to make someone smile but try to maintain a professional tone and exercise your discretion on whether is appropriate.

Even when you communicate data and information, your message might not always be understood. You may increase your chances of connecting with your audience by using the following strategies: clearly convey your key message, properly select your words, employ BANs, and include a call to action.
